Bringing a new life into your family, through birth or adoption, is such a special and important time in a family’s life. Each time a family chooses me to document this time is really a true honor! Below are some common questions asked regarding our newborn sessions.

How do I schedule a newborn session?

I encourage families to reserve your newborn session before baby is born. Since newborns are usually photographed within the first two weeks of life, booking early ensures you have a spot on our calendar. Once you book, I add your due date to our calendar and once baby arrives, you give us a call or shoot us an email and I can schedule your session.

Why are newborn sessions scheduled within the first two weeks of life?

During this time frame, newborns are still super sleepy and love to curl up like they were in the womb. They will never be this tiny again and they change so quickly.

 How long are newborn sessions?

Newborn sessions are usually about 2.5 hours and sometimes longer if little one doesn’t cooperate. I always follow baby’s lead and leave time to allow for feeding and cuddles.

 Where do sessions take place?

All newborn sessions take place at my in-home studio in Woodstock. I provide everything you will need….hats, headbands, blankets, wraps, etc.

What do I need to bring to our session?

Baby! And bottles if bottle feeding =). I aim to capture them just the way they are, so tiny and new. No themed props necessary or outfits. I provide soft blankets and simple wraps and hats, and delicate headbands.

Do you include family and siblings in newborn sessions?

Absolutely! I definitely encourage parents and siblings to be included!

What should we wear for family shots?

I recommend soft, neutral colors (blush, creams, greys, tans, taupes) so there are no distractions from baby. Try to avoid busy patterns. I am always happy to give opinions and thoughts on outfits. Contact me with any questions.

Do you have a baby’s first year package?

Yes, and I love watching our babies grow over their first year! Check out my Milestone package options.

NEWBORN SESSION PREP GUIDE

This guide will help prepare you and your baby for your upcoming Newborn Session. Following this guide will help ensure your session runs as smoothly as possible.

  • Newborn sessions are best photographed when Baby is 5-20 days old. After this time-frame, Baby is easily awakened and more difficult to pose.
  • Please note in the Questionnaire if you would like to have parent/sibling/family portraits done. These photos are done first and due to the size of the area and duration of the session, siblings are to be present for their portion of the session only.
  • Because I do not work with an assistant, mommy or daddy may need to help “spot” baby for some poses.
  • Please notify me if you plan to circumcise baby- session will be booked with healing time in mind.
  • Full Newborn sessions can last anywhere from 2-4 hours, depending on baby. If baby decides they don't want to cooperate - try to stay calm so they don't pick up on the frustration. If baby is just not willing to cooperate, we can discuss rescheduling for a different day. This is rare, but it does happen.
  • Props, headband, bonnets and wraps are supplied. If you have a sentimental item, bring along if you wish.
  • If baby is breastfed, avoid caffeinated and carbonated drinks as well as gassy and spicy foods 24 hours prior to session.
  • Keep baby awake minimum 2 hours prior to session (a bath works well). Most of the shots will work best if baby is very sleepy. I recommend trying (keyword...try) to keep baby awake for an hour before your session. Keeping baby awake on top of your own exhaustion may feel like torture, but it'll be worth when you see the end results. If baby refuses to stay awake, no biggie! Just let them sleep.
  • ***Give baby large feed before arriving at the Studio or plan to feed once you arrive. Be prepared to feed baby throughout session or have prepared bottles (bottles work great for posing and feeding simultaneously).
  • Bring baby to session in a button/zipper-down sleeper and loose diaper.
  • A pacifier is HIGHLY encouraged. Usage will be minimal and therefore nipple confusion will not occur.
  • Room will be very warm, dress in layers for your own comfort.
  • Neutral colored shirts are encouraged for family photos (highly recommend tanks for females). Photos will be cropped at the breast- no need to worry if your clothing doesn't fit around the belly. Please no logos.
  • It is suggested to clear schedule for the day to avoid over-stimulation prior to session; also, sessions may run longer than anticipated.
  • Pee (or poo) happens during family photos- bring a change of clothes just in case.
  • Family Shots - I adore family and sibling shots - those are the ones that get framed first at my house! I encourage them! I recommend simple clothing - no busy patterns, and a classic cream, navy, or black top always looks really nice and is flattering. Keep it simple. I like to do sibling shots right away, followed by family/parents + baby. This way dad or a grandparent can take the siblings for a walk, to the park, or out front to color/play games while we continue with the rest of the session.
  • Pardon Me! - Chances are I will look like a total bum at your session. I apologize in advance. I never wear hair products, perfume, or make up while photographing newborns. Sometimes the chemical smells can throw them off. I also wear old, comfortable clothes to newborn sessions because chances are that I will get peed, pooped, or puked on... Sometimes all three.
  • MOST Importantly- Be On Time. Having 3 kids of my own, I often have to rely on a hired caretaker to be present for your scheduled session with me. If you’re late to your session this can result in deducted time, limiting us from getting all the shots needed to give you a complete gallery.
